Roni Gibson is a multidisciplinary designer, educator, and creative strategist whose work explores the intersections of Black identity, systemic design, and emerging technology. With over eight years of experience in the design industry, including roles as a Senior Visual Designer at Amare and Creative Lead for major global events such as AWS: reInvent and London Tech Week, Roni brings a bold, culturally attuned lens to every project she touches.
Currently a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Sam Houston State University, Roni merges academic rigor with real-world practice, mentoring the next generation of designers in UI/UX, visual storytelling, and critical design thinking. She is a sought-after speaker and panelist, known for her dynamic presence and her commitment to fostering equity in the design and tech industries.
Roni is also the founder of Pathways, a pre-college initiative aimed at bridging educational gaps in design access for underrepresented communities and Black Design Houston a growing collective dedicated to elevating and empowering Black designers by fostering an inclusive, vibrant creative community. Through public programming, educational initiatives, and intentional networking opportunities, we advocate for greater equity and visibility within Houston’s design and arts industries.Her thesis, Into the Blackscape, serves as a framework for her ongoing research and curatorial work around the future of Black creative identity in digital spaces.
She currently serves on the board of AIGA Houston and continues to curate exhibitions and dialogues that challenge, uplift, and reimagine what design can look like when everyone has a seat at the table.
